Grand Theft Auto 5 is one of the more popular games of all time, with more than 130 million units sold as of May. In addition, Rockstar announced a bonus for PlayStation Plus subscribers in GTA Online on PlayStation 4: $1 million in GTA$ each month they log in from now until GTA Online debuts on PS5. Rockstar said it will offer “a range of technical improvements, visual upgrades and performance enhancements to take full advantage of the console’s powerful new hardware, making the game more beautiful and more responsive than ever.” It’s not clear, exactly, what sort of “expanded and enhanced” content the next-gen version of Grand Theft Auto 5 will include - but it seems notable that Sony wanted to lead with the information. Rockstar also announced that it plans to release Grand Theft Auto Online, GTA 5’s wildly popular online component, as a stand-alone product “in the second half of 2021.” For the first three months of its release, that game “will be available for free exclusively for PlayStation 5 players during the first three months,” said Rockstar - which suggests that the stand-alone version will have a price tag attached. Presumably, GTA 5 will come to Xbox Series X, too - although Rockstar’s news release did not specifically mention Microsoft’s console by name, saying only that “the adventures of Michael, Franklin and Trevor are coming to a new generation of consoles.” The news kicked off Sony’s “Future of Gaming” event, confirming a release on PlayStation 5. An “expanded and enhanced” version of Grand Theft Auto 5 will be released on the next-gen consoles during the second half of 2021, Rockstar Games announced Thursday.
